Paralympic Champion | World Record Holder
Obstacles do not get in the way of Chantal Petitclerc. The epitome of determination, perseverance and discipline, Chantal is the most successful wheelchair racer of all time, boasting multiple medals from all three of the world’s top athletic competitions. At just 13 years old, Chantal lost the use of her legs following an accident. Four years later, she would discover wheelchair athletics, paving the way for a long and very successful career which would take her to the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 and ultimately, to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. She retired after Beijing with a total of 21 medals – 14 of them gold – and 25 world records broken, making her the most celebrated track athlete in history. Now a commentator for the games on CBC and Radio-Canada, she remains active in the sport community. In April 2016, she was appointed by Prime Minister Trudeau as a new independent member of the Senate, where she intends to help build a better Canada.

Dr. Nancy Arthur is a Professor and Dean Research for UniSA Business, University of South Australia and Professor Emeritus, University of Calgary, Canada. Nancy’s teaching and research has focused on culture-infused career counselling, social justice advocacy, and career development for international students and workers. Nancy is a Registered Psychologist (AB), an Honorary Member of the Career Development Association of Alberta and served as a Vice-President of the International Association of Educational and Vocational Guidance. Nancy collaborated with CERIC for two projects, Career Theories and Models at Work: Ideas for Practice and Practice Principles: Career Theories and Models at Work.

Award-winning Professor, Writer and Researcher in Indigenous Youth
Dr. Sean Lessard is Woodland Cree and is from Montreal Lake Cree Nation in Northern Saskatchewan Treaty 6 territory. He is an award-winning professor, writer and researcher specializing in youth wellness. Sean is a former youth worker, teacher and high school guidance counsellor. He is known for his work alongside Indigenous youth and communities in the development of innovative educational programming and in particular Indigenous youth empowerment. Sean currently is an Associate Professor, Secondary Education at the University of Alberta, in Indigenous Education and Teacher Education. He continues to write and research on the experiences of Indigenous youth and families in and outside of school places. This Montreal Lake Cree Nation video is being shown across Canada in Landmark Cinemas, celebrating Sean’s work in his home community of Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

It is an interactive learning experience that builds awareness and understanding of our shared history by having participants literally walk through situations that include pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Leaders of the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) program from across Canada are invited to a national gathering on Sunday, January 28, 2024, in advance of Cannexus. The purpose of this convening is to discuss, learn and listen to ISET holders from across the country. Key goals will be to determine barriers that are being faced, understand opportunities that exist, and learn from success stories, all related to the advancement of skills training and employment support for Indigenous Peoples.
